How to Choose the Right Cosmetic Nurse in Wollongong (And the Red Flags I’d Never Ignore)

If you’ve ever looked into cosmetic treatments in Wollongong, you’ve probably realised very quickly… there are a lot of clinics out there now.

And honestly? That can make things confusing for patients.

As a cosmetic nurse, one of the biggest things I tell people is this: choosing your provider is more important than choosing the treatment.

Whether you’re thinking about skin treatments, anti-ageing concerns, scar revision, skin needling, or aesthetic medicine, you should feel safe, educated, and genuinely looked after - not rushed through an appointment.

So I wanted to write this blog almost like a conversation I’d have with a friend if they asked me:
“How do I know if a cosmetic clinic is actually safe?”

Here are the things I personally think matter most when choosing an aesthetic provider in Wollongong.

1. You Should ALWAYS Have a Proper Consultation

This is a huge one for me.

A consultation shouldn’t just be:
“What do you want done?”

A proper cosmetic consultation should involve:

  • your medical history

  • medications and supplements

  • allergies

  • previous treatments

  • skin assessment

  • facial assessment

  • discussion around risks

  • realistic expectations

Cosmetic treatments are still medical procedures.

If somebody is willing to treat you without asking about your health history, medications, or suitability… that’s a massive red flag.

At Scar Atelier, consultations are honestly one of the most important parts of what I do because every face, every skin type, and every goal is different.

2. Cheap Cosmetic Treatments Can Sometimes Cost More in the Long Run

I know pricing matters - completely understandable.

But if something feels extremely cheap compared to other cosmetic clinics in Wollongong or Sydney, I would encourage people to ask questions.

In Australia, cosmetic prescription products need to be prescribed appropriately for the individual patient.

Recently, there was a widely reported case in Sydney where multiple people ended up in ICU after allegedly receiving counterfeit cosmetic products in a “Botox Party” at home. Cases like this are scary, but they’re also a reminder of why safety standards matter so much. Don’t even let me get started on the DIY Injectable community!!

Your provider should be transparent about:

  • qualifications

  • product sourcing

  • medical oversight

  • emergency protocols (do they have emergency medications on site, are they current in their training, what happens out of clinic hours - are they contactable?)

  • infection control

Safety should never be the thing that gets compromised.

3. Your Provider Should Talk About Risks - Not Just Results

This one is important.

If somebody only talks about the “perfect result” and never discusses:

  • downtime

  • side effects

  • risks

  • complications

  • healing

  • aftercare

…that would concern me.

A good cosmetic nurse or aesthetic provider should educate you properly so you can make an informed decision. I can’t count the number of times someone has said “nobody has ever told me that” despite them having had previous treatments.

Sometimes that even means saying:
“I don’t think this treatment is right for you.”

And honestly, that’s a good thing.

4. You Should Never Feel Pressured

Good aesthetic medicine should feel collaborative.

You should never feel:

  • judged

  • rushed

  • upsold

  • pressured into treatment

  • made to feel like you “need” something

The best cosmetic consultations I’ve had with patients are usually very relaxed conversations about goals, concerns, and options.

Sometimes people come in thinking they need one treatment and we end up discussing something completely different - or even deciding no treatment is the best option right now.

5. Look for Someone Who Focuses on Natural, Long-Term Outcomes

Social media trends move fast.

But good aesthetic medicine should still look like you.

Personally, I’m much more focused on:

  • skin quality

  • facial balance

  • healthy skin

  • prevention

  • subtle refinements

  • long-term skin health

Whether somebody is coming to me for scar treatments in Wollongong, skin rejuvenation, or aesthetic medicine consultations, the goal is always to create a treatment plan that suits the individual.

Not trends.
